People online seem to take two major issues with the degree, and both are steeped in what they believe to be hypocrisy.

Issue One: Charlie Kirk infamously believed college is a "scam."

The late podcaster wrote a book titled The College Scam: How America's Universities Are Bankrupting and Brainwashing Away the Future of America's Youth, in which he argues that college degrees are "useless."

During a Turning Point USA event, Kirk expanded on these ideas, arguing that students are "filled with really bad ideas" and "if you look at the amount of money that you have to spend to go, the amount of time you spend here, and the ideas you have to endure, I do believe [college] is a scam."

Likewise, when speaking at a Young Women’s Leadership Conference, he told a 14-year-old girl "there’s an argument to bring back the ‘M-R-S degree,'" as he suggested women's focus should be on finding a husband.

So posthumously awarding him and his wife an honorary college degree seems like... an interesting choice to some:

"Mind you Charlie Kirk thought college was a scam and women shouldn't get an education," this person tweeted.

"Her husband advocated against people especially women going to college. wtf is this performative BS," another said.

"The hypocrisy of these motherfuckers is astounding," said another.

Issue Two: Critics are also debating why Kirk would accept a college degree that neither she nor her late husband studied to earn. This is fueled by Charlie's controversial arguments against DEI programs and his stance that people should only come into their positions through "merit qualification."

"Do you understand that people EARN honorary degrees because of their life's work and achievements?" one person asked. "Not just because they married a Podcaster that was anti-college."

"Stop with this honorary doctorate," another agreed. "She does not deserve that! She needs to work for it!"

"Celebrities getting honorary degrees is such a slap in the face to those who work their asses off to get those degrees. Then you make it someone like Erika Kirk and just add even more insult to injury, smfh."

"Meritocracy for everybody else but DEI for them!"

And finally, one person wrote, "i feel like they just give honorary degrees to everyone."
