Ethan Hawke just revealed that he used to hope he'd end up dating Drew Barrymore back in the '90s, and while their conversation was pretty lighthearted, not everyone is quite as charmed by his confession...especially given his messy history with Uma Thurman.

In case you need a refresher, Ethan and Uma were one of Hollywood's most iconic couples in the late '90s and early 2000s. They met while filming Gattaca in 1996, married in 1998, and had two children together before separating in 2003 amid widespread allegations that Ethan had been unfaithful.

Ethan denied that cheating caused their split, telling ABC News in 2004, "Uma and I did not split up over anybody's infidelity." But their breakup raised eyebrows when he married Ryan Shawhughes, who had previously worked as a nanny for his and Uma's children. The two tied the knot in 2008, have since had two kids, and remain married today.

On Oct. 16, Ethan appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, where the two revealed that they'd never actually met before, despite both being major Hollywood stars in the '90s. "I don't think I can remember a time in my life when I was not aware of you," Ethan told Drew before admitting, "What I can't believe is that we never dated, you know?"

Drew responded, "What me and every other girl on the planet wouldn't have given to date you. Where the hell were you?" Ethan then revealed that he used to go to parties in the '90s hoping he'd run into her, recalling, "There was many a night...where I would be going to a party, and I'd think, maybe Drew will be there."

Drew asked, "Why didn't you call me? We still had phones back then?" Ethan then admitted, "I like to play it cool. I wanted it to happen organically. You know, I thought...something magical." Drew responded, "And look what happened. Nothing."

Ethan said, "Now we're meeting on a talk show," prompting Drew to say, "Yeah. Well, whatever it takes." Drew then told him, "Nice to finally meet you," before adding, "I've waited my whole life."

Ethan also admitted that he sometimes looks back on his younger years and wishes he'd done things differently, recalling, "I think about, you know, various escapades of my youth and I'm like, Ethan, Ethan, if I could just, oh, I should have said that. I should have done that. Why didn't I? Oh, it would have been so, so good. So good."

To be fair, Ethan didn't specify exactly when in the '90s he now seems to imply he would have wanted to date Drew. So it's unclear whether this was before or after he met Uma in 1996.

Butttt, some viewers still weren't amused, with several bringing up his messy split from Uma and the fact that he's currently married...

However, others didn't see anything wrong with what Ethan said and argued that he was merely reminiscing innocently.

And a lot of people were actually rooting for them. 😭
