Here Is Everything We Know About Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance So Far
by Li Zhou · BuzzFeedPosted 15 hours ago
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of longtime Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her home near Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday. Since then, the local sheriff’s department and federal agents have launched a comprehensive investigation into her disappearance, and family members have pleaded for her safe return.
As of Thursday, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said he believed that Nancy was “still out there,” though authorities have not received evidence that provided proof of life.
Earlier this week, investigators said they thought Guthrie had been taken from her home “against her will,” potentially “in the middle of the night.” Nanos added that authorities were treating the incident, which could be a “possible kidnapping or abduction,” as a crime.

In a video posted to social media on Wednesday, Guthrie’s children made a heartfelt plea for their mother’s return and stressed the need for her to receive the medication she requires to survive. They also acknowledged reports of alleged ransom notes that have been sent to local and national media outlets.
“We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her,” Savannah Guthrie said in a message directed at a potential abductor. “We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen.”
Here’s what we know so far about the investigation and the circumstances of Guthrie’s disappearance:
What Authorities Have Said
Guthrie’s last known location was her home in Catalina Foothills, an unincorporated community north of Tucson, where she lived independently.
Authorities said she attended a dinner and game night with family members on Saturday evening, and was dropped off at her home at 9:48 p.m.
Around 12 p.m. on Sunday, Guthrie was reported missing after she didn’t show up for church, and family members went to her home to check up on her.
According to the sheriff’s department, Guthrie is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. She’s also of “sound mind” and has limited mobility. Nanos dismissed the idea that this was a case of “somebody who just wandered off.”
Although authorities said they believe Guthrie was taken against her will, Nanos declined to provide specifics about the crime scene. However, on Thursday, he noted that a doorbell camera at Guthrie’s home had been removed and said blood that was found on the porch was determined to be Guthrie’s based on DNA testing.
The doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on Sunday, Nanos said. Software then detected a person or an animal at Guthrie’s home around 2:12 a.m. At the time of this writing, authorities do not have access to the video footage. Guthrie’s pacemaker app was disconnected from her phone around 2:28 a.m.
On Thursday, Nanos said authorities would not be discussing whether there was forced entry to the home.
“I have no clue where that comes from. … That is just something we’re not discussing,” he said.
Where The Investigation Stands
Authorities haven’t ruled out any suspects or pinpointed a person of interest, Nanos said Thursday.
Earlier this week, alleged ransom notes were received by KOLD 13, a local Arizona news station, as well as TMZ.
Mary Coleman, a news anchor at KOLD 13, told CNN that the notes contained “specifics that only Guthrie’s abductor might know,” a deadline and a dollar amount.
Heith Janke, the FBI special agent in charge of the investigation, said the notes had a deadline of 5 p.m. on Thursday, as well as a second deadline of next Monday, if the first wasn’t met. They also included a mention of an Apple watch and a floodlight on Guthrie’s property.
TMZ reported that the alleged ransom note it received had demands for a substantial amount of bitcoin.
Authorities are taking the alleged ransom notes seriously, they said on Thursday.
“Every single lead is looked at,” Nanos said.
Janke added that the FBI was offering a $50,000 reward in return for information that leads to Guthrie’s recovery, or the arrest and conviction of a suspect in her disappearance.
Guthrie’s children emphasized in videos shared on Wednesday and Thursday that they were open to speaking directly with a potential suspect.
“We haven’t heard anything directly,” Savannah Guthrie’s brother, Camron Guthrie, said in a video on Thursday. “We need you to reach out, and we need a way to communicate with you, so we can move forward.”
