If you didn't know, Jennifer Lawrence is often spotted out in public wearing head scarves.

And many people have assumed this is her channeling Audrey Hepburn's iconic head scarf look as a fashion statement.

However, that couldn't be further from the truth. She recently revealed that there's actually a very practical reason she wears them.

Recently speaking to Vogue, she explained, "I've been wearing a scarf over my melasma spots ever since I started Tret, which of course I get photographed and people think I'm making some sort of fashion statement."

(When she refers to "Tret" in her quote, she is talking about tretinoin. It is a prescription-strength retinoid that can improve skin tone, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes blotchy, darker patches of skin, usually on the face. It’s especially common in women and can be triggered by hormonal changes and sun exposure.

Jennifer also revealed where she has melasma, because if you're like me, you're probably wondering where it could possibly be when her skin looks so flawless.

She told Vogue that she experiences it specifically on her cheeks.

So, there you have it! What looks like a fashion choice is actually pretty practical. Jen's head scarves help shield her skin from the sun, which can worsen melasma, and sun protection is an important part of treating the condition, too.
