West Nile virus creeps north in record year for EU cases – POLITICO

The West Nile virus is spreading across the EU at record levels and is reaching new regions of the continent, health authorities said Thursday.

In a statement, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said 1,715 cases were reported this year, with 130 people dying from the virus, which is mainly transmitted through mosquito bites.

Greece, Italy and France are the worst affected countries, but the virus is spreading further north, authorities say.
