The Queen of Pop, Madonna, made a comeback on the VMAs stage after 23 years. It was back in 2003, when Madonna sparked a massive controversy when she kissed Britney Spears on the lips during their live performance. Since then, Madonna hasn't performed live at the VMAs, even though she has made an appearance at the MTV award show several years, with 2021 being the last. In 2026, Madonna opened the award show and left everyone screaming at the top of their lungs. 

While there have been several conversations surrounding the much-awaited performance, Madonna won hearts with her energetic hours on stage, which also featured her collaboration with Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter. During the acceptance speech, Madonna walked down memory lane and recalled being told that her career was almost over after her 'butt-cheeks' were exposed during a wardrobe malfunction.

Madonna made a daring outfit choice as she performed at the MTV VMAs in 2026. For the day, the gorgeous singer wore a deep red lingerie corset bodysuit, which she teamed with a black silk robe. Madonna accentuated her look with knee-high boots, diamond hoops, gloves, and her signature black glasses.

Soft makeup and open tresses added the final touch to her VMAs 2026 look. While speaking on stage, Madonna recalled the 1984 incident when she came across a wardrobe malfunction that she thought nearly ended her career. It was at the 1984 VMAs, when Madonna was set to open the show. 

Madonna, 68, was performing her song, Like A Virgin. While doing so, she danced on top of a giant wedding cake, and one of her shoes fell off. Madonna thought she would pick it up by rolling and twirling as she dove to the floor, pretending that it was a part of the performance. As she was doing the same, her dress (a wedding dress) went up, exposing her underwear and backside completely, which was caught on live camera.

At the time, exposing excessive skin was not common, and Madonna's incident turned it into a headline. Obviously, the singer, following that, achieved what she did, but it was soon after the incident that she was told that her career was over.

Madonna recently revealed she was told that her 1984 wardrobe malfunction would end her career

Speaking at the VMAs 2026, Madonna recalled the incident and revealed how her dress went up, exposing her backside. She also added that her manager was left furious and told her that her career was almost over. Madonna could be quoted as saying:

“I had a little problem with my shoes, and one of my stilettos fell off, and I dove onto the stage to try to make myself look cute and sexy, and my dress went up, and my butt cheek was hanging out, and in those days, butt cheeks were not hanging out. I went backstage feeling really proud of myself, and my manager told me that my career was over."

Speaking of Madonna's VMAs performance after 23 years, she, while on stage, performed Bring Your Love with Sabrina Carpenter, and some other songs from Confessions II. She was joined by Charli XCX as well. The gorgeous singer sparked a conversation soon after a section of netizens felt that she was 'lip-syncing' on stage.

Madonna also momentarily forgot why she was on stage while receiving an award; however, she remembered instantly after Charli XCX opened the card for her to memorise. Madonna has not yet reacted to the online assumptions surrounding her VMAs 2026 performance.
