In a piece of tragic news, it was revealed that actress Rani Mukerji’s mother, Krishna Mukerji, has passed away. Before her death, Krishna was a well-known name in the entertainment industry, having risen to prominence with her musical talent. The news of her death was first confirmed by the family on September 22, 2026.

Krishna had always supported her daughter's acting endeavours. She once also spoke about how she felt when Rani Mukerji got the National Award ‘very late’ in her career.

Rani Mukerji won the National Award last year, in 2025, for her phenomenal performance in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. During Durga Puja, the actress’ mother, Krishna Mukerji, opened up about how she felt about her daughter's win. She stated that even though she was happy, she couldn't help but think that Rani should have received the award many years ago.

According to Krishna, Rani deserved a National Award for her hit 2005 movie Black, where she starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan. While speaking with Instant Bollywood, she said:

“I am happy that she got a National Award. But she got it very late. She should have gotten the award for the film Black, I think so. But today, I am very proud of her.”

Krishna went on to add that Rani got the award after spending 30 years in the acting industry. But despite this, she reiterated that she was truly happy for her daughter.

It is worth mentioning that Rani has often credited her mother for helping her become the actress she is today. She said that Krishna was the one who had advised her to give acting a go when she was just 18 years old. This is when Rani began her career with Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat, which was released back in 1997.

Interestingly, in a 2025 interview, Rani confessed that after her first screen test, her mother told the producer that she would ruin his film if he took her in it. She recalled that Krishna found her performance really bad and soon changed her mind about Rani being a good fit for acting. She said:

"So for my mother, it was like, you do it and see how it goes. Though after my first screen test, she found me so bad that she told the producer, 'I think you'll ruin your film by taking my daughter. You'll go through losses. Better you don't take her'. Because the producer was very keen to sign me, Salim uncle (Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat producer)....But my mom was smart enough to understand that I was not doing a good job. So she was like, 'I don't think you should take her.'"

Rani Mukerji's mother, Krishna Mukerji, reportedly passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. She was 75 years old when she took her last breath. A statement that was released later in the afternoon confirmed the tragic news. The family urged everyone to respect their privacy as they come to terms with the loss of Krishna Mukerji. The statement read:

"With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother, Mrs. Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief."
