Taylor Sheridan's The Madison, Tribute To Robert Redford And Two Lead Characters' Passing Explained
'Yellowstone' creator, Taylor Sheridan chose to pay a tribute to Robert Redford in Paramount's new series 'The Maidson'. Here's the reason, along with a glimpse into the series, where two leads died!
by Priyanka Dutta · BollywoodShaadisYellowstone creator, Taylor Sheridan is all set to make wonders again, as she recently dropped a new series, The Madison. The series was released on Paramount+, and three episodes are up as of March 14, 2026, with the other three episodes being scheduled for next Saturday, i.e. on March 21. Initially, it was said that The Madison could have a similar narrative to Yellowstone or it could also be a spin-off, an unverified claim and assumption, which was later dismissed by Forbes. While Robert Redford didn't have any involvement in Taylor Sheridan's The Madison, a tribute was paid to him in the premiere episode. What was the reason behind the same? Let's have a look!
Why was Robert Redford given tribute in The Madison? His connection to Taylor Sheridan's career
In the very first episode of The Madison, Robert Redford is credited, with the context being given clearly, which was that he didn't work in the series, but it's meaningful rather than ornamental. Robert Redford passed away at the age of 89 in September 2025, and as he was introduced in the series, it kind of left people with the question of why. To mention, while Robert Redford didn't act or have any involvement in the series, he had been someone who played a role in Sheridan's career.
In 2023, while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, while talking about Yellowstone, Sheridan said that HBO executives initially didn't want Kevin Costner in the main role as 'John Dutton' and said that if he could bring Robert Sheridan, then they would greenlight the pilot. Well, Taylor Sheridan drove to Sundance to spend a day with Redford and ended up convincing him to play the role of 'John Dutton'.
When she called back the HBO executives about getting Robert Redford convinced, they remained shocked, stating they wanted someone to look like him, not exactly him. Well, the project got a green light and ultimately showed Kevin Costner as 'John Dutton', as Sheridan didn't end up working with Robert Redford. Recalling what happened, Sheridan said:
"They said, ‘We want Robert Redford. They said, ‘If you can get us Robert Redford, we’ll greenlight the pilot.’ I drive to Sundance and spend the day with him and he agrees to play John Dutton. I call the senior vice president in charge of production and say, ‘I got him!’ ‘You got who?’ ‘Robert Redford.’ ‘What?!’ ‘You said if I got Robert Redford, you’d greenlight the show.’” And he says - and you can’t make this s*** up - ‘We meant a Robert Redford type.’"
Two major characters die in The Madison
With the first 3 episodes being released on Paramount+, viewers remained a bit shocked over the fact that two major characters died at the beginning of the show. For the unversed, it has been labelled as Taylor Sheridan's most intimate project to date, which shows two distinctive worlds, the beautiful landscape of Montana and the vibrant energy of Manhattan, while evaluating the ties that bind families together. It's a love story filtered through a family drama and is all about transformation and resilience.

While Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell's roles as 'Stacy' and 'Preston Clyburn' and their relationship formed the foundation of the family, at the beginning of the series, two major characters died. Kurt Russell and Matthew Fox’s characters, as 'Preston' and his brother 'Paul', were seen dead in a plane crash, although they will continue to appear in the series through flashback sequences. While Kurt said that he didn't expect this to happen so soon, Matthew joked that he has a connection to plane crashes, as his earlier project also showed something similar.
