Who is Erica Tazel? Meet the 49-year-old theatre actress

Erica Tazel is an American theatre and television actress best known for playing 'Deputy U.S. Marshal Rachel Brooks' on FX’s hit crime drama, Justified. Born in March 1977 in Dallas, Texas, she grew up in the Dallas area and developed a passion for acting and the theatre from an early age. She finished her secondary education at the renowned Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, the same institution that produced legendary alums like Erykah Badu and Norah Jones.

After school, Erica moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend Spelman College, a historically Black liberal arts college for women, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. She later graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree from the Graduate Acting program of New York University’s (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts.

After making some guest appearances in popular films and television series, Erica became a main cast member on television when she joined Justified, appearing in all six seasons of the FX cop drama from 2010 to 2015. Over the years, she built a strong television career with roles in several acclaimed productions. Erica portrayed 'Barbara Kolstad' in The Good Fight, played 'Matilda' in the 2016 remake of Roots, and later appeared as civil rights activist 'Ella Baker' in Genius in 2024. Erica Tazel's original career choice was medicine

Being a full-time actor was not what Erica had originally planned her career to look like. She reportedly began college as a biology pre-med student before eventually shifting toward theatre and performance. Her journey in the acting industry began in the NYC theatre, where she made her debut in the 2000 rendition of The Winter's Tale. Erica's acting prowess even landed an NAACP Theatre Award for I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady from Rwanda (2007), winning the Best Lead Female. In between theatres, she started getting minor roles on television, with guest spots on Sex and the City and The Office

Beyond acting, Erica Tazel has also dedicated time to philanthropy and advocacy work. She volunteers with Get On The Bus, an organisation that helps reconnect children with incarcerated parents during Mother’s Day and Father’s Day visits. She also supports Sparrow Rainbow Village, an AIDS hospice and orphanage based in Johannesburg, South Africa. And now, with her fiancé's ALS diagnosis, she has emerged as a vocal advocate for the condition's awareness.

Erica Tazel became Russell Andrews' caregiver after his ALS diagnosis

Erica has now become a major physical and emotional pillar in Russell Andrews’ life after his ALS diagnosis. During the couple's emotional CNN interview, she reflected on the moment they finally received answers after months of uncertainty surrounding his worsening symptoms. In the midst of uncertainty, the diagnosis somehow brought them clarity, and Erica became even more determined to be Russel's wife. In her own words:

"I was uncharacteristically calm, and in a way, it was an answer to a lot of questions that we had. [There] was not a sigh of relief, but some understanding of what was happening. And I looked at him across the room, and I said, ‘At least now we know what it is, and I still want to be your wife.' "

The actress added that the experience completely changed her understanding of love and commitment. Reflecting on the institution of love, Erica beautifully said, “There are cases where it truly is unconditional,” and the comment has earned her admiration from viewers.

More about Russell Andrews' ALS battle

Andrews, 64, revealed that he was diagnosed with ALS in late 2025 after experiencing symptoms including muscle weakness, twitching, dropping objects, and difficulty performing routine tasks. The actor explained that he initially believed he was dealing with pinched nerves or possibly the effects of stress during the COVID-19 shutdowns and Hollywood strikes.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that gradually damages the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Mayo Clinic says the condition begins with muscle weakness and stiffness, and the body deteriorates, leading to paralysis, and eventually problems with swallowing and breathing, and death is inevitable.

Despite the painful reality of the disease, Andrews explained that he and Tazel have found comfort through the ALS Network, a nonprofit organisation that supports patients and families affected by the condition. The couple, along with the Better Call Saul actor's daughter, Anya Isabella, now stand as a unit, voicing their advocacy for ALS research and spreading awareness about this still incurable condition.

Having Erica Tazel as both Russel Andrews' partner and caregiver, the couple has become yet another powerful example of unconditional love after the late Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart
