Peter Michael Falk was an American actor who rose to fame for his roles in projects like The Princess Bride, Prescription: Murder, Wings of Desire, Mikey and Nicky, The Cheap Detective and Mickey and Nicky. For decades, Peter Falk was known for playing 'Lt. Columbo', the dishevelled, but brilliant detective on the popular TV series, Columbo.  However, off-screen, the actor was also a dad to his daughters, Catherine and Jacqueline Falk.

The actor passed away in 2011 at the age of 83 from cardiorespiratory arrest, with pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease listed as the underlying causes. Over the years, Catherine has been in the public eye more than her sister Jacqueline. Now, over a decade after his demise, the actor is once again in the headlines. However, for an extremely unfortunate reason: the death of his daughter, Jacqueline.

Peter Falk and his first wife, Alyce Mayo, were former classmates at Syracuse University. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, they tied the knot in 1960 and later welcomed two daughters, Catherine and Jacqueline, through adoption. In a conversation with Closer Weekly in 2023, Catherine reflected on her dad's legacy and the relationship between her parents and was quoted as saying:

"My mom always told me my dad was Columbo long before Columbo found my dad. He’d ask the same question in 20 different ways until he got the answer that he wanted. He was always curious about things....They were best friends. ... I remember watching my mom and dad laugh and tell stories about their college years. It was nice as a teenager to experience that."

However, what began as a happy family soon turned bitter. Peter Falk's relationship with his children became strained after his divorce from Alyce Mayo. For the unversed, Peter and Alyce were married for 16 years before divorcing in 1976. According to The Catherine Falk Organisation, Catherine was 5 years old when the split happened. What further worsened Peter's relationship with Catherine and Jacqueline was his marriage to Shera Danese, who appeared alongside him in the Columbo franchise. It ultimately led Catherine to lobby for legislation protecting family visitation rights. Peter's daughter also recalled to the outlet how her dad would take their family to Los Angeles Kings hockey games, movie premieres and ice skating.

Catherine followed in the fictional footsteps of her father, Peter Falk, and became a private investigator. Apart from playing a detective on-screen, Peter also taught Catherine important skills, including reading people, which eventually helped her in her real-life job. While there is no confirmation as to whether she is still working as a PI, in a conversation with Closer Weekly back in 2023, she had credited her father for her skills as an investigator and stated:

"The greatest lesson I learned from my father was how to size people up. He had a true gift for that. He taught me how to analyse people’s gestures, body language and physical movements."

When Peter Falk's health began to decline in his final years, Shera Danese allegedly didn't allow his daughters, Catherine and Jacqueline, to see their father. According to The Catherine Falk Organisation, in December 2008, Catherine filed paperwork to be made conservator of Peter. She claimed that Shera had not allowed her to see or speak with her father since he had his hip replacement surgery a year prior in 2007.

Around the same time, Catherine alleged that Peter had Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Catherine's petition resulted in a legal battle, with Shera claiming that the father and daughter were estranged. In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Shera's attorney, Marshal Oldman, stated:

"There is certainly concern about finances on the part of Catherine. Whether that’s the primary motive, we’ll let the court decide."

However, after Shera Danese was appointed as the legal conservator of Peter Falk, she reportedly kept contact between Peter and his daughters to a minimum, per Entertainment Weekly. However, what surprised everyone was that Catherine allegedly learned of her father's passing through news reports. She also claimed she wasn't allowed to attend his funeral.

The tragedy and the battle to see her father in his final years led Catherine to found The Catherine Falk Organisation. She lobbied for the passing of legislation known as "Peter Falk's Law," which aimed to protect the visitation rights between children and their ailing parents. According to Entertainment Weekly, the legislation was first passed in New York state in 2015, followed by several other states that have approved similar legislation.

While Catherine Falk remained under constant limelight, Jacqueline was the complete opposite. Before her death in April 2026, Jacqueline remained away from the spotlight. On April 27, 2026, she died at age 60. Her death was ruled a suicide, according to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner obtained by PEOPLE.
