Samantha Morton had a ‘close to death’ experience that made her pull out of Transsiberian
Samantha Morton had lived a widely eventful life. However, not many might be aware that her life almost came to an end after she suffered a freak accident. As per reports, a piece of ceiling fell down on her in her then-new home, causing her to leave the film, Transsiberian. At the time, she was replaced by actress Emily Mortimer.
The accident caused Samantha a head injury, which in turn resulted in her having a stroke. Samantha even had to relearn how to walk after the accident. During an interview with The Guardian, the actress recalled how “a bloody great chunk of ceiling” landed on her head and cut her carotid artery, leaving her “close to death.” She also recalled the first thing she did after the accident, saying:
“I came out of hospital, and the first thing I said was, 'I want another baby!' So we had another baby. I still have a slight disfluency; sentences are spaced differently, but I was given a clean bill of health.”
It is worth mentioning that when Samantha pulled out of Transsiberian following the accident, the reason was kept a secret at the time. While learning how to walk again, she took an unexpected 18-month break from films. Once her rehabilitation was over and she was back in good health, she gave birth to her second daughter. After becoming well enough to return to films, Samantha went on to play a Marilyn Monroe impersonator in Mister Lonely.
Following her recovery, Samantha Morton also spoke about her deep bond with singer Jason Pierce of Spiritualized. For those who don't know, he once almost died of pneumonia. She said:
“He was the only one who understood, being near to death. He got me through.”
Samantha Morton revealed she had been warned not to get “too excited” about any role when she was replaced in Her
For those unaware, Samantha was all set to play the artificial intelligence operating system also named ‘Samantha’ in Her. In the movie, Joaquin Phoenix’s character was supposed to fall in love with her. Speaking about how she was replaced by Scarlett Johansson, she said:
“Well, I have to say that it’s every director’s prerogative, in regards to the final cut of the film. And for any job, you’re never guaranteed to be in it in the end because unless you are the lead in the movie and you’re pivotal, you never really know.”
The Odyssey star admitted that she has been warned not to get “too excited” about a role as there is always a possibility you won't be part of the final film. However, she was still sad and surprised when Scarlett Johansson replaced her in the final version of Her. Still, Samantha said that the time she had on set with Joaquin and working with Spike on the script, all of those were “really special.”
