Modernized air-conditioned DEMU express trains to begin Yangon–Mawlamyine–Yangon service on July 1
by EMG · Eleven Media Group Co., LtdModern air-conditioned DEMU passenger express trains will begin operating on the Yangon–Mawlamyine–Yangon route from July 1, Myanma Railways (MR) announced.
To improve passenger convenience, MR under the Ministry of Transport has already introduced modern air-conditioned Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) express trains on the Yangon–Nay Pyi Taw–Yangon and Yangon–Mandalay–Yangon routes. Following strong passenger demand, the service will now be extended to the Yangon–Mawlamyine railway line with the introduction of Train No. 83 Up (Yangon–Mawlamyine) and Train No. 84 Down (Mawlamyine–Yangon), starting on July 1, 2026.
Each DEMU trainset will comprise two upper-class coaches and four first-class coaches, providing seating for 312 passengers, including 72 in upper class and 240 in first class.
The end-to-end fare has been set at K22,000 for upper class and K16,000 for first class.
The trains will stop at Toe Kyaung Kalay, Bago, Thein Zayet, Kyaikto, Thaton and Paung stations. The full journey between Yangon and Mawlamyine will take approximately six hours, allowing passengers to make same-day return trips.
Passengers can purchase tickets for the new DEMU services, as well as the existing No. 81 Up and No. 82 Down express trains on the Yangon–Mawlamyine route, through the Online Railways Ticketing and Payment System (ORTP). Tickets are available up to seven days in advance for journeys between the origin and destination stations and up to five days in advance for travel from intermediate stations.
