Myanmar Authorities Seek Action Over Nun Costume Controversy at Miss Grand Myanmar
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdMyanmar’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has announced that it is coordinating with the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate and take action against a beauty contestant and event officials involved in a recent controversy at the Miss Grand Myanmar pageant.
The response came after media inquiries regarding widespread criticism of a contestant who wore a Buddhist nun’s robe during the competition. The ministry stated that on May 5, 2026, it formally requested authorities to scrutinize and take necessary action against Tachilek contestant Ei Mon Lwin, as well as those responsible for organizing the event.
According to the ministry, Ei Mon Lwin appeared on stage in the attire of a Theravada Buddhist nun and participated in a model show segment. Videos of the performance spread widely on social media, prompting public backlash.
Many online critics accused the contestant of disrespecting religion and the Buddhist monastic community.
Miss Grand Myanmar organizers also confirmed that the nun costume was not presented during rehearsals and only appeared during the live competition. As a result, the contestant has been disqualified from the pageant.
