The Yangon Region Government will take legal action under the Yangon City Development Law against individuals who place unauthorized barriers on public roads and parking areas in Yangon, according to Yangon Region Minister for Municipal Affairs U Myo Myint Aung.

The minister made the statement while responding to a question raised by Yangon Region Hluttaw representative U San Kyaw of Hlaing Township Constituency No. 2 during the seventh day of the Third Yangon Region Hluttaw's Second Regular Session, held on June 23. The lawmaker asked whether there were plans to take action under the 2018 Yangon City Development Law against various types of obstructions placed on major roads and numbered streets across the city.

U Myo Myint Aung explained that many of the barriers had been installed by security forces since 2021 due to security concerns. He said that nearly half of these barriers have already been removed in areas where security restrictions have been eased, while some remain in place because of ongoing security requirements.

Regarding barriers installed by private individuals, the minister said that Section 315 of the 2018 Yangon City Development Law clearly prohibits placing any obstruction on public roads that interferes with vehicle parking or traffic flow.

He added that township municipal authorities are conducting regular inspections and removing illegal obstructions. However, some barriers have been reinstalled after being cleared. Authorities will therefore continue to take strict legal action, without exception, against repeat offenders in accordance with the provisions of the 2018 Yangon City Development Law.
