Park Chan-Wook Got Some Jokes
by Alejandra Gularte · VULTUREPark Chan-Wook is getting a little silly while on this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury. During the post-closing ceremony panel, the jury president showed a sense of humor when discussing the challenges of serving as the leading member of the voting committee for a prestigious film festival, like being away from the phones all morning. On making a decision to leave, Chan-Wook joked, “It wasn’t to get our phones back.” Some choices, like choosing the best director or the best actress, were harder than others, leading to a tie or two winners from the same film. “As far as the director award, to emphasize this again, both filmmakers did an amazing job with their work, and we couldn’t decide whether one was better than the other,” he explained. As for who got the biggest prize of the night, Palme d’Or, Chan-Wook took it as a chance to remind everyone that while he’s won the Grand Prix, Best Director, and the Jury Prize, he’s never won a Palme d’Or. “I didn’t want to give the Palme d’Or to any of the films because it’s an award that I’ve never gotten,” he said, before leaving everyone with one final joke. “But I had no other choice.”
