At Least One Awards Show Will Stay on Broadcast TV
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREThe Tony Awards have extended their contract with CBS, planning to remain on the network through at least 2032. This makes the Tonys an outlier in the awards show circuit, with both the Oscars and Emmys reportedly moving to streaming soon. The Academy Awards will go to YouTube when the deal with ABC ends in 2029. And the Emmys may depart to Prime Video as soon as next year, depending on how talks go. With the Grammys simulcast on ABC and Hulu, that’s half on EGOT on streaming-exclusive.
CBS has aired the Tonys for the past 48 years, and next year mark’s the show’s big 8-0. That’s a long relationship, one that not even supermergers and network shake-ups can tear asunder. “We are thrilled to extend our long-standing partnership with CBS,” said American Theatre Wing president and CEO Heather Hitchens and Broadway League president Jason Laks in a joint statement obtained by Broadway News. “For the past 48 years, we have collaborated with CBS to bring the best of Broadway to theater fans all around the world and we look forward to marking the 80th anniversary of the Tony Awards with our best show yet.”
