Lilly Wachowski Calls Out J.K. Rowling for Supporting Trans Genocide

There are a little more than three months until the premiere of HBO Max’s Harry Potter series, which means there’s still time to stop people who want to engage with its nostalgic, drab Muggleslop aesthetic for one reason or another. In a new interview with Variety, The Matrix, Cloud Atlas, and Sense8 co-creator and co-director Lilly Wachowski did not mince words when it came to discussing the forthcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books. “J.K. Rowling funds trans genocide, full stop. So, if you support Harry Potter, you’re supporting trans genocide. The money that goes into you enjoying these products, a portion of that money goes to J.K. Rowling and that money goes into her funding anti-trans legislation all over the world,” she said. Wachowski also labeled Rowling and Elon Musk “literal Nazis,” the latter of whom she’s spoken up about before. “There is a one-to-one connection between Elon Musk and the Nazi community. He did a full-blown Sieg Heil on a national stage,” she explained. To support the works of either of these people, whether it’s buying a Tesla or watching the new Harry Potter series, is to participate willingly in the bigoted ways they spend their money.

Wachowski’s statements come on the heels of her forming Anarchists United Foundation and Anarchists United Studio alongside film programmer Sarah Marie Flores, which plans to do the exact opposite of what the likes of a Musk or Rowling is doing. The foundation will offer grants to aspiring filmmakers with the hopes of radically changing the landscape of who gets money to make films. “I think our connectivity is going to be the thing that saves us,” Wachowski said of her endeavor. She also went on to praise Christopher Nolan’s casting of Elliot Page in The Odyssey as an example of true “allyship.” That allyship and support will continue as Anarchists United elevates those who haven’t had a chance to tell their story yet, broadening the scope of storytelling and sparing the rest of us from seeing the same shit over and over again.
