Who Goes to a Black Crowes Concert and Chants ‘U.S.A.’?

He’s got the remedy, all right, about making his fans eat crow. A Black Crowes concert on May 31 descended into an unusual scene when Chris Robinson admonished factions of the crowd for chanting “U.S.A.” during the gig. TMZ reports that the havoc began when an image of the band’s mascot dressed as Uncle Sam was projected onto a screen, which the Tampa crowd interpreted to be a patriotic message. “Thanks for the geography lesson,” Robinson snarled in response to the Floridians. “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.” This elicited boos and walkouts from the audience, who couldn’t be enticed to stay for one of the band’s classic hits, “She Talks to Angels.” “Some of us have real faith. For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid,” Robinson continued. “And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant.” For all of his strange and way-too-open musings, Robinson has never been an overtly political figure in rock music — he recently described himself as not being interested in politics in favor of “poetry and art and people and experience.” He might be feeling a bit differently now.
