It’s Charli the Actress, Baby

by · VULTURE

Debates about whether or not brat summer is actually over can rage on all they wish; Charli XCX is onto the next thing. Well, not musically. Benito Skinner’s gay college comedy Overcompensating came out (hah!) on Prime Video on May 15, commencing Charli XCX’s post-Brat acting career. In episode four of the show, Charli plays a version of herself that is both an object of adoration and a screaming, coke-addled psycho. Charli, notably, is a close collaborator with Skinner’s boyfriend, Terrence O’Connor, but that’s not the only reason she’s on the show.

The pop star is currently in the early stages of a hard pivot into film and TV acting. Sadly, she’s not coming to Imax screens — despite rumors that she was going to be the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s big-screen Narnia adaptations, Sex Education’s Emma Mackey landed the part. Overcompensating is Charli’s first live-action acting role ever, but she has seven confirmed movie roles that have yet to come out. Below, all the acting projects Charli XCX is attached to and what we know about them.

100 Nights of Hero

Who else is in it? Nicholas Galitzine, Emma Corrin, Felicity Jones, Richard E. Grant, and Maika Monroe.

What’s it about? Directed by Julia Jackman in her feature debut, 100 Nights is a period fantasy film based on the graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg, inspired by One Thousand and One Nights. It will be distributed by IFC Films and has already finished filming (with shots of Charli in large green robes available). She’ll play a character named Rosa, who, in the books, is the youngest of five sisters who’ve learned to read and write despite it being medieval times.

Status update? It will be released sometime in 2025, per Variety.

Faces of Death

Who else is in it? Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, and Jermaine Fowler.

What’s it about? Based on the 1978 documentary-style horror film of the same name, Faces of Death will be a horror movie directed by Daniel Goldhaber (How to Blow Up a Pipeline). It follows a woman who works as a moderator for a YouTube-like video platform and finds a group of people restaging the original film’s murders.

Status update? The film has already finished filming, according to an interview with Ferreira by Collider on March 16, 2024.

Erupcja

Who else is in it? Lena Góra, Will Madden, and Jeremy O. Harris

What’s it about? The word “erupcja” means “eruption” in Polish, which makes sense since Charli shot the film in Warsaw. Directed by Pete Ohs (Everything Beautiful Is Far Away), Charli and Harris also helped Ohs write the film. It focuses on a rocky relationship between two women, per Variety: a tourist played by Charli, and the other, a Polish national, played by Góra.

What’s the status update? The movie was filmed in the midst of brat summer in August 2024, which made it difficult to keep quiet, despite the intention for it to be a secret project. Ohs confirmed to Variety that Charli “definitely got recognized a bunch of times,” saying, “She was always really sweet. She took selfies with many a Polish fan.”

I Want Your Sex

Who else is in it? Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Johnny Knoxville, and Margaret Cho.

What’s it about? Directed by queer cinema great Gregg Araki,  I Want Your Sex follows a young man named Elliot (Hoffman), who gets a job working for artist Erika Tracy (Wilde), who, it turns out, also wants him to be her sexual muse. We don’t yet know what Charli’s role in the film will be, but it could be sexy.

Status update? The movie wrapped production by October 28, 2024, per Deadline.

Sacrifice

Who else is in it? Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, and John Malkovich.

What’s it about? Based on Joan of Arc, the film follows a modern “Joan” (Taylor-Joy) as she attempts to save the world by … hijacking a gala and taking three hostages. Directed by Romain Gavras (Athena), the movie is co-written by Will Arbery of Succession.

Status update? The last we heard about the film was in December 2024, when the Greek City Times reported that the movie was filming across multiple locations in Greece, including Athens, Lavrio, Drama, and Santorini.

The Gallerist

Who else is in it? Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Daniel Brühl, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

What’s it about? The film follows a gallerist — duh — who is attempting to sell a dead body at Art Basel Miami. It’s directed by Birds of Prey’s Cathy Yan.

Status update? Portman posted that the film was done shooting on February 6, 2025, writing, “It’s a wrap on The Gallerist! So loved working with @cathyyan, @jennaortega, @catherinezetajones, @davinejoy, @sterlingkbrown, @charli_xcx, Zach Galifinakis, Daniel Bruhl, and the rest of the incredible cast and crew. Can’t wait to share more with you soon!”

The Moment

Who else is in it? Alexander Skarsgård, Rosanna Arquette, Isaac Cole Powell, Kate Berlant, Rish Shah and Jamie Demetriou.

What’s it about? Not only is The Moment the one film on the list that Charli is producing, it’s also “based on her own original idea,” Variety confirmed on January 23. It’s directed by Aidan Zamiri, who directed Charli’s music videos for “Guess” and “360,” making his feature-film debut. Produced with A24, it’s the first for Charli’s new banner Studio365. The film is reportedly a mockumentary that follows a pop star, played by Charli, as she gears up for her first arena tour, per Deadline.

Status update? Filming in the U.K. as of March 18, 2025.
