FKA Twigs Is Taking a STAND Against Shia LaBeouf

by · VULTURE

FKA Twigs is utilizing California’s Stand Together Against Non-Disclosure (STAND) Act to get out of what she says is an illegal NDA from ex-partner Shia LaBeouf. As part of the settlement of her 2020 lawsuit against LaBeouf, Twigs (legal name Tahliah Barnett) signed a nondisclosure agreement. LaBeouf claimed in December that Barnett violated that agreement when she gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter. What did she say that was so inflammatory? When asked if she felt safe after the settlement, she said, “No, I wouldn’t say I feel safe. I feel really passionate about being involved with organizations such as Sistah Space and No More, to help survivors in any way that I can. I think it’s less about me at this point and more about looking forward. Just, you know, moving on with my life.”

A court filing in defense of Twigs called her statement “laudable, generic, and benign.” In her new lawsuit, she seeks to prove the NDA is in violation of STAND, which invalidates NDAs intended to keep victims of sexual harassment and assault from discussing their experiences. “This action was taken in response to Mr. LaBeouf’s attempt to bully and intimidate Twigs through a frivolous and unlawful secret arbitration he filed against her in December in which he sought to extract money from her,” Barnett’s attorney Mathew Rosengart told NBC News.

In 2020, Twigs sued LaBeouf for assault, sexual battery, and infliction of emotional distress. She withdrew the suit in 2025 because she wanted to “move on with her life.” Earlier this year, FKA Twigs won a Grammy for her album w. LaBeouf was recently arrested for battery in New Orleans.
