Yes, Steve Rogers Is in Avengers: Doomsday

by · VULTURE

Daddy’s home! No, really. In Marvel’s first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Evans rides a Triumph motorcycle back to a house where he picks up a baby after putting his Captain America uniform away. (We’re assuming that’s his baby, although we suppose he could’ve started a new life as a babysitter.) “Steve Rogers will return,” the December 23 teaser confirms. It seems a little unnecessary to identify such a recognizable character by name but, then again, we’re living in a timeline in which Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom, so maybe we needed the clarification. Evans hasn’t appeared in the MCU since 2019’s Endgame, when he as Steve Rogers passed the shield to Sam Wilson’s Captain America and time traveled back to be with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter. The actor previously suggested that he was not a part of the stacked Doomsday cast, going so far as to tell ScreenRant in June that it’s “sad not to be back with the band” and that he expects that it will be “that much harder when [the film] comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”

Still, today’s official confirmation of Evans’s return didn’t necessarily come as a shock to everyone. The Steve Rogers teaser reportedly played in theaters before early screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ashand the footage leaked online, as evidenced by a December 19 tweet with more than 9,000 likes that declared, “Fuck Steve Rogers and that baby.” Apparently nostalgia bait doesn’t work for everyone. Still, we know two people who are definitely excited. “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together,” the Russo brothers captioned the teaser on Instagram. “It was always going to come back to this …” How and why is Steve back? Guess we’ll find out when Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. In the meantime, there are more than two dozen confirmed members of the cast already, so Marvel has a full year to continue dropping as many individual character teasers as it wants.
