Jacob Elordi Tricked Us

Look, I was willing to buy it: Jacob Elordi, the Creature himself, injured his foot so badly that he couldn’t go serve on the Cannes Film Festival jury. There would have been a delicious appeal to Elordi walking la Croisette in one of those boots, but I understand that people enjoy having their dignity in tact. Cannes, however, seems more like a marathon than a sprint, and that’s a lot of days hobbling around and squeezing one’s body into theater seats, the likes of which are probably not friendly to a giant Australian guy. So Elordi dropped out of the festival, leaving a spot open on the jury in what’s shaping up to be a very odd and maybe also lackluster year on the Riviera. Poor Jacob Elordi. Feel better soon!

Actually, maybe don’t feel better soon, because it’s starting to look like Jacob Elordi’s foot might not hurt that badly, or even at all. Late last week, the actor was spotted on vacation in Hawaii with his rumored new partner, Kendall Jenner, and then Jenner and Elordi were later seen leaving a double date with Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner over the weekend. Paddleboarding? Driving a car? These are not things a person can do with a busted foot. What kind of busted foot do you have, Jacob Elordi? An ingrown toenail? It’d be one thing if we saw pictures of Elordi hobbling around on crutches or in the aforementioned boot while Jenner supports him. I’m not saying an injured person can’t go out to dinner with friends who are like, “Aw, sorry you’re hurt.” Either Elordi is in the best spirits of all time for a person recovering from an injury or perhaps … he was not injured to begin with. Maybe he’s faking. He is, after all, an Oscar-nominated actor.

A festival like Cannes needs someone like Elordi more than Elordi needs that festival — this year especially. He already has an Oscar nomination. He’s in six minutes of Euphoria every weekend. He is one of the most in-demand young actors, having already worked with the likes of Sofia Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, and Ridley Scott. Being on the Cannes jury is an honor, sure, but only if you’re really willing and able to watch three-hour films that run the risk of being challenging. Maybe Elordi didn’t feel like doing that! Maybe he felt like going to Hawaii instead.
