Larry David Is Telling the Story of America
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREKathryn Hahn is Mary Todd Lincoln, but not where you’d think. Larry David has taken it upon himself to celebrate America’s semisesquicentennial with a Nebbishy People’s History of the United States. Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness (no Oxford comma this is AMERICA 🦅🦅🦅) is premiering on June 26 on HBO. The show will last 7 eps, and each episode will have 4 sketches. Barack Obama’s Higher Ground is producing, and Obama will be in a sketch. “On Curb and on Seinfeld, I was the boss. I’m used to being the boss,” David said at SWSW, as reported by Variety. “And Obama is also quite used to being the boss.” Apparently the two clashed over notes, which is not surprising if you’ve ever heard anything about David’s creative process.
Ahead of the show’s premiere, David premiered a clip of V-J Day and the shooting of the “Sailor Kissing Nurse” photo and exactly how nonconsensual that event actually was. Other sketches will include Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn as Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes as the Wright Brothers, and Larry David/Jerry Seinfeld as Lewis/Clark (look it up).
