Duffy Is Making a Disney+ Documentary About Her Kidnapping and Sexual Assault

by · VULTURE

Six years after Duffy wrote a harrowing essay about her disappearance from the music industry, the Welsh singer will tell her whole story in a documentary now in production with Disney+ U.K. and Hulu Originals. Duffy broke big with the song “Mercy” off her 2008 debut album, Rockferry. At some point, she withdrew from the public eye after the release of her second album in 2010. In 2020, she wrote about an incident in which she was “raped and drugged and held captive over some days,” though she did not specify when during her time away from the industry this horrific event took place.

The feature-length documentary will be a “retrospective film traversing Duffy’s life, from her upbringing in Wales through to her meteoric rise to fame and her withdrawal from public life following her unfathomable experience.” In 2020, Duffy wrote that she disclosed this information so part of her could “be freed,” adding, “I owe it to myself to release a body of work someday, though I very much doubt I will ever be the person people once knew.”
