Savannah Guthrie Addresses Content of Ransom Note that Claims Her Mother Died
by Fran Hoepfner · VULTUREOn June 22, new details were released about the second of two ransom notes sent to news outlets after the disappearance of Today host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, in February. On June 23, NBC News shared that the second letter claimed Nancy had died and did not offer an apology or a further request for money. Sitting with the rest of the Today hosts, Savannah commented on this news for the first time during the morning broadcast. “I don’t have any comment on this story and I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here,” Savannah began. Despite the news that her mother may be dead, Savannah and her family are still offering a reward for information that can help shed light on what happened. “This is a new story today that’s on your radar. But this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended family lives, that our children live every day, and we are in agony,” she continued.
“This is the moment to tell you that we need your help. Please, if you’re watching, no matter how small, the reward is there. You can tell us, it can be anonymous. Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children,” she said, flanked by her Today co-hosts. Craig Melvin encouraged viewers to call the tip line with any information to help Savannah’s family find a “modicum of peace.”
