It’s a Big Week for the Number 13

American Horror Story season 13 premiered last night, a highly anticipated season given the number’s superstitious history and the return of series favorites like Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters. The first episode opens with a young couple at odds — Kira (Madelaine Petsch), who has triskaidekaphilia, a clinical obsession with the number 13, and Ben (Joey Pollari), who suffers from triskaidekaphobia, a clinical fear of the number 13. Their differences come to a head when Swiftie Kira plans to celebrate her birthday on Friday the 13th with a trip to the 13 isles of the Grenadines with her 13 best girlfriends and expects Ben to be present.

Just three hours after the episode premiered on FX and Hulu, Taylor Swift released the encore to her most recent album, The Life of a Showgirl, at midnight ET on September 25. A coincidence? Or a plot to divert attention from Murphy’s blasphemy of her famously lucky number 13?

This isn’t the first time Murphy has poked fun at Swift and her army of fans in one of his shows. In his 2015 comedy-horror series Scream Queens, Chanel Oberlin, played by AHS alum Emma Roberts (who reprises her role as Coven’s Madison Montgomery in AHS 13), assigns one of the new pledges to her sorority the nickname “Deaf Taylor Swift” for her hearing impairment and obsession with Taylor Swift. In one of the most memorable final moments of a pilot episode, Deaf Taylor Swift is brutally murdered by a campus serial killer while obliviously singing Swift’s “Shake It Off” to herself.

After last night’s joint release, Murphy should probably just embrace 13 as his new lucky number and dedicate episode 13 of his in-the-works Glee-boot to the pop star.
