Chappell Roan and Apple Martin Recant Their Brigitte Bardot Tributes

Pop star Chappell Roan recanted her tribute to Bardot on December 29, following Bardot’s death on Sunday. “i did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this,” Roan said in a post on her Instagram story. “very disappointing to learn.” Initially, Roan posted positively about Bardot. “She was my inspiration for red wine supernova. Rest in peace Ms. Bardot,” Roan said.
In the interim, Roan likely learned about Bardot’s constant stream of anti-Muslim statements, including her claim in 1999 that France was “again invaded by an overpopulation of foreigners, especially Muslims.” Bardot was fined by the French government multiple times for Islamophobic statements that incited racial hatred. Bardot also made the homophobic claim in 2003 that gay men “jiggle their bottoms, put their little fingers in the air and with their little castrato voices moan about what those ghastly heteros put them through.” She was additionally known for saying, during the Me Too movement, “Many actresses flirt with producers to get a role. Then when they tell the story afterwards, they say they have been harassed.”
Roan wasn’t the only celebrity to learn about Bardot’s controversial history in public. Apple Martin, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow, also took back her tribute to Bardot. “I was completely unaware of Bardots views and will never support any kind of hatred directed at anyone,” she wrote on Instagram. “She is not the person I thought she was whatsoever.” Odessa A’zion, star of I Love LA and Marty Supreme realized in real time that Bardot didn’t stand for the same things as her. “okie dokie learning allot about Brigitte Bardot,” she said via her Instagram Story. “I ain’t know she was like that.” Influencer Matt XIV added on X that he “just read” Bardot’s Wikipedia page and “there’s a karla sofía gascón quality to the way [Bardot] literally hated every minority group.” All the cool girls are Googling Brigitte Bardot.
