The 2026 Oscar Nominations Shortlist

The Academy loves itself some witches and vampires these days. The 2026 Oscar nominations shortlist came out on December 16, unveiling 12 categories’ worth of pre-nominations. Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners are both big winners with eight mentions, bolstered by two Best Original Song entries apiece. Those numbers are particularly notable for For Good after it didn’t manage to score a nomination earlier this month for Best Film: Musical or Comedy with the Golden Globes. Maybe the Academy liked the sex cardigan more than the HFPA.

Perhaps the most exciting moment of the morning, however, is that awards watchers got their first look at the brand-new Casting category, which will make its debut at the 2026 Oscar ceremony. Mostly, the pre-category is made up of probable Best Picture nominees like One Battle After Another, Hamnet, and Sentimental Value. The fun ones, though, are French film Sirāt and thriller-comedy Weapons — they’re both in genres that the larger Academy has historically overlooked.
