The Oscars Are Ditching Hollywood
by Rebecca Alter · VULTUREIt won’t be “Hollywood’s biggest night” for much longer. In 2029, the Oscars will move the annual ceremony from the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard to the L.A. Live complex in downtown L.A., the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday. In a ten-year agreement lasting until 2039, the industry’s glitziest awards show will take place in the Peacock Theater, named for the streaming service that brought us such hits as The Miniature Wife. That same year, the Oscars will no longer be broadcast on television, switching entirely over to YouTube. Both of these changes, seemingly part of some sort of Oscars deglammification conspiracy, will take place for the 101st annual Academy Awards.
The Oscars have actually bounced between neighborhoods through their nearly century-long history, taking place at various venues in Hollywood, Downtown, and Santa Monica over the years. Prior to moving into the Dolby Theatre in 2002, they were held in downtown L.A. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Shrine Auditorium. At L.A. Live, they will be neighbors with local hidden gem Crypto.com arena.
