You Can See Everything But the Nanny
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREThere are approximately 1 billion lingering questions to have after viewing Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s You Can See Everything. Today, we got one answer: Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans had a nanny. We just never saw her. In a new op-ed for the New York Times, reporter Amy Chozick wrote about seeing the documentary. The film focuses heavily on a quote from Chozick’s 2023 profile “Liz Holmes Wants You to Forget About Elizabeth” that she did not record. Chozick addresses the whole misquote allegation that appears in the doc (she says she did document it in a since-lost notebook), and she also explains the child-care situation. “When I saw the film, I kept thinking: Where is the nanny?” Chozick wrote. “She was nowhere to be seen. Without her, the couple comes off as harried multitasking parents, literally rocking the baby with one foot.” Chozick describes her as “Vanessa, the Salvadoran woman who was sometimes on hand to help care for their toddler and newborn.”
Holmes and Evans have two children together: a son, William, now 5, and a daughter, Invicta, now 3. At the time of the doc’s filming at their rental in San Diego, Holmes and Evans were primarily interviewed without their kids, with the exception of Holmes nursing infant Invicta or rocking her with her foot. William is barely seen at all. Of course audiences wondered about the child-care aspect of the family especially after boasting that they’re willing to show “everything.” “It’s fascinating to me, the older child is presumably being cared for by a nanny off-screen the entire time,” Jia Tolentino said on the Critical Darlings podcast, hosted by Vulture and Blank Check. “There is a person on the compound who was taking care of the older child because Billy and Elizabeth are with the baby and Nathan all of the time that we see, and that’s fascinating to me. It’s not mentioned, and that is a choice.” Now, at least, that choice is documented.
