Tributes have poured in after the passing of beloved Dundalk fan 'Maxi' Mark Kavanagh.

Dundalk matchgoers unveiled a large banner on Friday evening before their clash against Bohemians as news spread of his death.

'Maxi' became synonymous with the club down through the years and was part of fundraising efforts to help the club in recent weeks as Dundalk faced financial turmoil.

A local taxi driver, Mark was very well thought of in Dundalk and had been sent plenty of well wishes from the club and its fans after falling ill over the previous week.

And since the sad news broke, tributes have poured in from League of Ireland fans both in Dundalk and further afield.

Confirming the news this morning, Dundalk FC posted on social media, saying: "A town in mourning. Oriel just won’t be the same without you, Maxi. C’mon The Town."

"RIP Maxi, a legend of the highest order, embodied everything this town was all about," said one supporter.

"Saddened to hear about the passing of Maxi. He would put anything before him, and get behind causes whether it be football related or not. He was a big believer in Dundalk Football Club and the League of Ireland. Rest in Peace Maxi. A big loss. Condolences to his family," said another.

"Waking up to the sad news that Maxi Kavanagh has passed away. While his loss will be felt at Oriel Park, this pales into insignificance when compared to the loss to his family. Maxi was a true LOI supporter and a character that made the league great. May he Rest in Peace," added another.
