Snow Patrol star shares story about having same tattoo as Ed Sheeran on Late Late Show

Snow Patrol star Johnny McDaid opened up on designing a special tattoo for Shape of You songwriter Ed Sheeran on Friday’s Late Late Show.

The second Late Late Show of the season saw host Patrick Kielty joined by Saoirse Ronan, to chat about her new movie, The Outrun, and working with her husband on set, the 'brilliant' Bundee Aki to talk about his recent citizenship,

TV presenter Rylan Clark also joined Patrick, and Saoirse, in the RTÉ studio to talk about his his divisive new Paramount+ series Dating Naked UK, with Snow Patrol also playing two stunning songs, as well as having a chat with the host.

During an interview with Kielty, McDaid shared how the tree design in the tattoo includes the line "Nuair is gá dom filleadh abhaile, is tú mo réalt eolais”, which are the lyrics of a Foy Vance song which was written especially for Johnny McDaid's father who passed away in 2011.

Johnny spoke about how he, Foy Vance and members of his family also have similar tattoos to the one that he designed for Ed Sheeran.

"I drew the tree. Ed wanted a tattoo and he said can you draw a tree so I drew it on some kitchen paper and he had on it tattooed on his arm," Johnny said.

"The words are a Foy Vance song that he wrote and dedicated to my late father and it is a song called Guiding Light. The words are in Irish and in my mum's handwriting."

Patrick Kielty also introduced the band members to some people in the audience who had Snow Patrol tattoos including Julie Carney from Northern Ireland, who had the lyrics of This Isn't Everything You Are tattooed on her side.
