Roni Size to host “world’s deepest rave” in abandoned Welsh mine

In a world record attempt, the Bristol DJ will perform 1,375 feet underground

Legendary UK DJ Roni Size is attempting to set a world record for the "world’s deepest rave" by performing over 1,000 feet underground.

The event will take place within an abandoned Welsh slate mine 1,375 feet beneath the mountains of Cwmorthin on Thursday, October 15, in a "first-of-its-kind experiment".

Specialist field recording technology will be used during the performance, while the set will be "driven" into the slate inside the mine using vibration transducer technology.

Geophones and hydrophones will also capture the "frequencies travelling through rock, mud and water" as a way to record the mine’s acoustic response, with reverberated sounds then used in the live mix, per a press release.

"Back in Bristol, we’d put on a party wherever we could, and some of the sounds came from what we called happy accidents, playing a track at the wrong speed, hearing something that sounds new but still works," says Roni Size.

"Raves could take place in some crazy and unexpected places, on someone's front lawn, down in tunnels, but what I've always done is play to the environment and the crowd. The set is a living, breathing thing that reflects the people there with you."

It will attempt to set a new world record for the "deepest underground rave in history", hosting a limited number of ballot winners below the ground.

Those in attendance will need to traverse dark stairways and zip lines down "sheer rock faces" before reaching the deep underground chamber where Roni Size will perform.

"How much more could you reflect the environment than by pumping a set into the mountain, hearing the sound travelling through the slate, rock and mud, and bringing it back into the mix? It's the most underground of underground raves ever," Roni Size concludes.
