'Bigger than Sydney to Hobart': Sail Port Stephens kicks off with record fleet
by Dylan Nicholson · Newcastle HeraldThe 2026 Sail Port Stephens Commodore's Cup Passage Series has kicked off.
The week's racing marks the 19th year of one of Australia's premier offshore sailing events, which is shaping as the largest yet.
A record-breaking fleet of 124 starters hit the line immediately off Nelson Bay's break wall on Monday, making this year's edition even bigger than a Sydney to Hobart race start.
Media director Mark Rothfield said competitors and spectators alike can look forward to spectacular conditions.
"Forecasts are predicting bright sunshine and a 10-12 knot south-westerly breeze, ideal for fast, tactical racing across the stunning Port Stephens waterway," he said.
The action kicked off from 10:55am with spectators lining the Nelson Bay marina and southern coastline to watch the action.
"Among leading lights in Division 1 include Marcus Blackmore's RP52 Ammonite 52, the Kerr 40 Mk3 Condor, Shaw 11m Little Nico and two Farr 400s - Bullwinkle and Vento," Mr Rothfield said.
Some competitors got their racing started early with the Newcastle to Port Stephens lead-in event on Sunday.
"Crews were treated to exhilarating strong reaching conditions across Stockton Bight, with standout performances across the fleet," Mr Rothfield said.
Taking line honours, and securing both PHS and ORC handicap victory, was the Thompson 920 Road Runner (LMYC), which powered to the finish at speeds of up to 20 knots, completing the course in an impressive one hour and 41 minutes.
IRC honours went to KD4, skippered by Joe de Kock, capping off a highly competitive offshore race.
The onshore celebrations also kicked off on Monday, with the official Welcome Party delivering a legendary atmosphere at d'Albora Marina Nelson Bay.
It kicked off the largest entertainment line-up in the event's history, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy both on and off the water.
"With record participation, ideal sailing conditions, and a vibrant program both on and off the water, the 2026 Sail Port Stephens Commodore's Cup Passage Series is poised to be one of the most memorable editions yet."
The passage series runs until Saturday April 18.
