Jazz club welcomes Wellington musos
by Brenda Harwood · Otago Daily Times Online NewsThe Dunedin Jazz Club continues its concert series with a show featuring two world-class Wellington-based musicians.
The show, to be held this Saturday, June 27, from 7.30pm at Hanover Hall, will be led by Wellington-based jazz musicians Nick Granville (guitar) and Nick Tipping (bass), performing alongside local musicians Bill Martin (piano) and Carl Woodward (drums).
The Nick Granville Quartet will perform a wide-ranging selection of jazz standards, Latin jams, and guitar classics, along with some of Granville’s originals.
Granville and Tipping regularly perform together around the Wellington circuit under their duo name G&T and have a wealth of performing, touring and educating experience.
Granville has performed with jazz icons Dave Weckl, Eric Marienthal and Bob Mintzer, and with pop artists Ronan Keating, Delta Goodrem and New Zealand taonga Sir Dave Dobbyn.
Granville has released many albums, has taught at the New Zealand School of Music, and operates a YouTube channel.
Tipping returns to the DJC after embodying the works of Charles Mingus in its October concert last year.
A professional double bassist, Tipping is a three-time winner of the Best Jazz Artist award at the Aotearoa Music Awards and a leading figure in the New Zealand music scene.
A PhD graduate and former head of jazz at the New Zealand School of Music, Tipping has toured with the NZSO, recorded with NZ String Quartet and is a long-standing member of klezmer ensemble The Kugels.
Dunedin Jazz Club director Bill Martin will play piano for this concert and is joined by frequent collaborator Carl Woodward on drums.
