Kyuhyun quits drinking to protect his voice while balancing demanding musical performances

Super Junior member Kyuhyun revealed that he has stopped drinking alcohol in order to take better care of his vocal condition while performing in musicals.

On May 15, Kyuhyun appeared as a guest on KBS 2TV’s 'The Seasons: Sung Si-kyung’s Sweet Boyfriend.' During the episode, he performed “Still in Memory,” showcasing his signature emotional vocals on stage.

Currently starring in the musical 'Death Note,' Kyuhyun shared that he has already completed more than 40 performances recently. Since debuting as a member of Super Junior, he has expanded his career as both a solo singer and musical actor, steadily building his presence in the musical scene alongside his reputation as a ballad vocalist known for stable live performances.

During the broadcast, Kyuhyun candidly revealed that his throat condition had not been in good shape, saying he even received IV treatment (a drip) while preparing for the show. He also recalled feeling anxious before going on stage, worrying, “What if I can’t produce sound?”

Host Sung Si Kyung noted that musicals are highly rewarding but physically demanding, to which Kyuhyun responded with a surprising confession: “That’s why I’ve recently quit drinking.” The remark drew attention on set, especially given his well-known image as someone who enjoys alcohol.

Sung Si Kyung reacted by saying that giving up alcohol shows just how important the stage must be to him. Kyuhyun explained that he used to enjoy drinking with acquaintances while sharing good food, but lately he has been prioritizing rest and vocal care even on days without performances. “When you face something truly precious, priorities naturally become clear,” he said.

Sung Si Kyung praised his decision, commenting that it reflects positive growth as a musical actor. After the broadcast, Sung also posted a photo with Kyuhyun on social media, humorously captioning their relationship as an “love-hate relationship,” highlighting their close friendship.
