‘Train to Busan’ Director Yeon Sang Ho Launches Korea-Japan Netflix Co-Production ‘Human Vapor’ With Star-Studded Cast
by K-Soul · allkpopNetflix will exclusively release the original reboot series 'Human Vapor' worldwide on July 2.
The project is a Korea-Japan co-production led by director Yeon Sang Ho, who serves as executive producer and screenwriter. Japanese film powerhouse Toho and Korean production company Wow Point jointly planned and produced the series. The drama has already drawn major attention across Japan and the global OTT market thanks to an all-star cast featuring Shun Oguri, Yu Aoi, Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, and Yutaka Takenouchi.
On May 13, Wow Point confirmed that the Netflix series 'Human Vapor,' executive produced and written by Yeon Sang Ho, will premiere on July 2. The drama reimagines Toho’s 1960 tokusatsu film 'The Human Vapor' through a modern lens. The story begins with an unprecedented murder during a live broadcast, where a human body suddenly swells and explodes. It follows a mysterious serial killer capable of transforming into gas and passing through any obstacle, along with those trying to stop him.
Yeon Sang Ho’s Universe Meets Classic Japanese Tokusatsu
One of the biggest reasons the series is drawing attention is the fusion of Yeon Sang Ho’s signature genre storytelling with the imaginative legacy of Japanese tokusatsu cinema.
Yeon Sang Ho previously built a distinctive cinematic universe through works such as 'Train to Busan,' 'Hellbound,' and 'Parasyte: The Grey,' blending disaster, horror, monsters, religious fanaticism, and societal collapse. In this latest project, he expands the original premise into a contemporary mystery thriller as executive producer and writer.
Directing duties are handled by Shinzo Katayama, known for the streaming series 'Gannibal' and films 'Missing' and 'Siblings of the Cape,' all recognized for their chilling portrayals of human darkness. The project combines Yeon Sang Ho’s genre-driven worldbuilding with Katayama’s cold and psychologically intense directing style.
Rather than a simple remake, the series aims to reinterpret one of Japanese tokusatsu cinema’s most iconic concepts for the global streaming era.
The story kicks off with a shocking explosion during a live television broadcast. The perpetrator is a mysterious being capable of transforming into gas and slipping through walls, cracks, and barriers. As the “Human Vapor” continues a series of foretold murders while evading police pursuit, the terror evolves into a metaphor for an invisible fear spreading through society.
Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi Reunite After 23 Years
The casting became one of the project’s biggest talking points long before release.
Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi star as detective Okamoto Kenji and reporter Kono Kyoko, respectively. Both actors have built large fan bases in Korea through numerous acclaimed works. Although they previously collaborated on voice-acting projects following the 2001 drama Ao to Shiro de Suiri, this marks their first live-action reunion in 23 years.
Speaking about the series, Shun Oguri said, “I thought it was an incredible project. I was instinctively drawn to the suspenseful story progression and the deeply human drama hidden behind a title that reveals nothing.” He added, “I’m excited to work alongside such talented people from both Korea and Japan.”
Yu Aoi also shared her anticipation, saying, “The story feels like stepping into an unknown world, and I’m excited to discover what kind of experience awaits. It feels like setting sail into the open sea, and I won’t forget the sense of adventure this team brings.”
The lineup further expands with Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, and Yutaka Takenouchi, adding even more weight to the large-scale project. Industry watchers are particularly curious to see the synergy between Yeon Sang Ho’s genre universe and Shinzo Katayama’s directing approach.
Rookie Actor UTA Cast as the Human Vapor
One of the most surprising casting choices involves newcomer UTA, who was selected to play the Human Vapor himself.
The production team reportedly searched extensively for an actor with no preconceived image, ultimately choosing UTA for his acting debut. Casting a newcomer as the central villain in a series filled with Japan’s top actors is considered an unusually bold move.
The decision also reflects the essence of the character. The 'Human Vapor' is not merely a monster, but an undefined and unsettling embodiment of fear. By placing an unfamiliar face at the center, the production aims to heighten the audience’s sense of anxiety and strangeness without the baggage of an established celebrity image.
A Global Project Backed by Toho, Wow Point, and Netflix
The project is spearheaded by Japanese media company Toho, with Korean studio Wow Point joining as a co-producing partner. Combined with Netflix’s global distribution platform, 'Human Vapor' has evolved into a major Korea-Japan collaboration designed for worldwide audiences.
Industry observers have also noted the strong involvement of Korean creators at the heart of the production. Led by Yeon Sang Ho and CEO Yang Yoo Min, Wow Point is presenting a new model that combines Korean genre production techniques with iconic Japanese IP.
The series is also placing heavy emphasis on visual execution. Renowned VFX studio Shirogumi, which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, joined the project to create grounded realism rather than fantasy-driven spectacle.
“The production team focused most heavily on achieving realism instead of fantasy,” the producers stated. “Viewers around the world will experience a new level of visual storytelling that goes far beyond the conventional style of Japanese dramas.”
Yeon Sang Ho Expands His Global Reach
Yeon Sang Ho and Wow Point are also expanding beyond Japan.
The filmmaker recently confirmed plans for the movie 35th Street alongside Appian Way Productions, founded by Leonardo DiCaprio, and investment-distribution company TriStar Pictures, marking another step into Hollywood.
In Korea, Yeon Sang Ho continues building a global OTT-focused lineup through projects including 'Revelations,' 'The Bequeathed,' 'Parasyte: The Grey,' and 'Hellbound' Season 2.
Ahead of the release of 'Human Vapor,' Yeon Sang Ho will also meet audiences with his new zombie thriller 'Colony,' which follows survivors battling evolving infected creatures. The film premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival before its domestic theatrical release.
Online reactions to the teaser trailer have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with viewers commenting, “The visuals look insane,” “I’m already hyped from the start,” “Shinzo Katayama never misses,” and “Japanese productions have been on a roll lately.”
More than half a century after the original tokusatsu classic first debuted, 'Human Vapor' is being reborn as a major Korea-Japan Netflix collaboration. Combining Yeon Sang Ho’s genre storytelling, Japan’s top-tier actors, Toho’s legendary IP, and Netflix’s global platform, the series premieres worldwide on July 2.
