‘The King’s Warden’ becomes No. 2 highest-grossing film of all time with 16.28 million viewers

The film 'The King’s Warden,' directed by Jang Hang Jun, has officially climbed to No. 2 on the all-time Korean box office chart.

According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system, the movie reached a cumulative audience of 16,283,970 as of April 11. This milestone was achieved just 68 days after its release, marking a remarkable pace in box office performance.

With this achievement, 'The King’s Warden' has surpassed the final audience record of 'Extreme Job' (2019), directed by Lee Byeong Heon, which drew approximately 16.26 million viewers. The film now stands as the second most-watched movie in Korean box office history.

Distributor Showbox expressed its gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the audience who knocked on the long-awaited gates of Gwangcheongol, we feel deeply warmed. We sincerely thank the 16.27 million citizens who made their way to Gwangcheongol.”

'The King’s Warden' is set during the reign of King Danjong, the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty. The story follows the exiled young monarch, a village head who takes care of him, and the people of Gwangcheongol, as they form a heartfelt bond of friendship.

Director Jang Hang Jun has achieved his first film to surpass 10 million viewers with this work. Actor Park Ji Hoon has gained nationwide recognition for his emotionally resonant yet steadfast performance, while Yoo Hae Jin captivated audiences of all ages with his seasoned acting, delivering both laughter and tears.
