Actor Ryu Jun Yeol has been spotted in Cannes, France, where the Cannes Film Festival is currently underway, drawing attention from fans and media even though he is not part of any official film lineup this year.

According to a Japanese netizen who identified themselves as a representative of Japanese film distributor Elas Films, they met Ryu Jun Yeol on May 13 in Cannes and later shared the encounter on social media. The poster described meeting the actor unexpectedly while attending the festival as a buyer and briefly discussing Korean film distribution.

The netizen said they mentioned a Korean film starring actress Han So Hee, and noted they hesitated slightly due to recent media attention surrounding the two actors’ personal lives. When they mentioned the film Heavy Snow (Heavy Snow), Ryu Jun Yeol reportedly responded positively, saying that he definitely knew it and that it sounded very interesting, before laughing and engaging warmly in the conversation.

A photo shared with the post shows the two smiling during their chance meeting on the streets of Cannes. Ryu Jun Yeol appeared in a white shirt paired with a deep green jacket and wore a festival accreditation badge around his neck, indicating his access to official Cannes venues.

The lighthearted exchange, even around a potentially sensitive topic, has been well received online, with many pointing to Ryu Jun Yeol’s relaxed and friendly manner while interacting with international attendees.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival features a strong Korean presence across multiple sections. Director Park Chan Wook serves as jury president, while director Na Hong-jin’s Hope is included in the competition section. In the non-competitive lineup, Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony has been officially invited. In addition, director Jung Juri is presenting Dora in the Directors’ Fortnight section.

Although Ryu Jun Yeol is not attending as part of a specific official selection this year, he is believed to be present in an industry capacity, meeting international distributors and experiencing the festival environment.

He also shares a previous working connection with Yeon Sang-ho through the film Revelations (Revelations).
