South Korea moves to crack down on ticket scalping ahead of BTS concert

South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has begun taking action against illegal ticket resales related to upcoming performances by BTS.

On March 11 KST, the ministry announced that it had closely monitored major online secondhand trading platforms following reports of scalped tickets for BTS concerts scheduled in Gwanghwamun and Goyang.

Despite the event’s strict one ticket per person and non transferable policy, authorities discovered 1,868 online posts (including duplicates) advertising tickets for resale.

Among these cases, four suspicious listings involving 105 tickets were reported to the Korean National Police Agency for investigation. The posts allegedly involved individuals obtaining multiple tickets for the same performance and attempting to resell them at significantly inflated prices.

The ministry also emphasized that tickets purchased through illegal resale channels will effectively be unusable due to strict identity verification measures at the venue.

According to event organizers, the Gwanghwamun concert will utilize a mobile QR code system that prohibits screenshot usage and prevents re scanning once the code has been used. Additionally, all attendees must undergo ID verification upon entry and will receive a wristband that cannot be reattached if removed. Random identity checks will also be conducted inside the venue, and anyone found violating the rules will be removed from the event.

Organizers are also monitoring online platforms to detect transactions that violate ticketing policies. Listings suspected of illegal resale may lead to ticket cancellations if sellers fail to provide proper explanations.

As additional ticket reservations for the BTS Gwanghwamun concert have been announced, the ministry warned that scalping attempts and potential fraud cases may increase. Authorities have requested ticketing platforms and online marketplaces to remove policy violating listings and strengthen monitoring.

Minister Choi Hwi Young stated, “Ticket scalping disrupts the fair distribution of performances and exploits the genuine passion of fans for popular culture. Starting with this investigation request, we will continue taking firm action until illegal ticket sales are eradicated and a fair viewing culture is established.”
