Lee Jun Ho returns as a relatable, cash-strapped hero in Netflix's new series 'Cashero'
by K-Soul · allkpopA refreshingly grounded superhero series is set to close out the year on an upbeat note. Lee Jun Ho, Kim Hyang Gi, and Kim Byung Chul transform into eccentric heroes whose powers grow stronger in proportion to the cash they hold—or the food they consume.
Their day jobs are anything but heroic: a civil servant, a lawyer, and a convenience store cashier. United solely by a sense of justice, they break into their housing subscription savings accounts, sacrifice liver health, and even give up dieting to protect the world.
In short, these are heroes defined by everyday struggle. Raising the stakes, Lee Chae Min and Kang Han Na step in as villains who suppress these ordinary heroes with overwhelming capital, driving tension to its peak.
Netflix original series 'Cashero' (written by Lee Jane and Jeon Chan Ho, directed by Lee Chang Min) held its production press conference at the Westin Josun Seoul Parnas in Gangnam. Director Lee Chang Min attended alongside cast members Lee Jun Ho, Kim Byung Chul, Kim Hyang Gi, Lee Chae Min, Kang Han Na, and Kim Hye Jun.
'Cashero' is a fantasy action drama based on the webtoon of the same name. It follows Kang Sang Ung, a civil servant who unexpectedly inherits superpowers from his father and embarks on a journey to save the world.
Lee Jun Ho portrays Sang Ung, an ordinary public official at a local community center. Though he gains extraordinary abilities, he faces a dilemma: every use of his power drains his cash. Despite this, he fights relentlessly to become a hero.
Explaining why he chose the project, Lee Jun Ho said, “The ending of Part 1 really resonated with me. Sang Ung’s dilemma—needing to save money for marriage but having to spend it to use his powers—was incredibly compelling.”
For Lee, the most important aspect of character building was depicting Sang Ung’s inner transformation. “At first, Sang Ung couldn’t understand or accept an ability that requires spending money to save others,” he explained. “But over time, he realizes that pursuing justice over money aligns with his true nature. I focused on portraying his growth as he accepts his fate.”
Sang Ung teams up with other superpowered individuals. Kim Byung Chul plays the group’s leader, a lawyer known as “Attorney,” whose ability to pass through walls grows stronger the more alcohol he drinks.
Kim Byung Chul paid special attention to portraying drunkenness. “I wanted to capture that loose, fluid quality that comes with being intoxicated,” he said. “I hope it brings viewers a lot of fun.”
Kim Hyang Gi plays Bang Eun Mi, whose telekinetic powers increase in proportion to the calories she consumes—especially when she eats bread. Honest and bold by nature, the character stands out for her frank personality.
“I worked hard to make eating bread while delivering lines or performing action scenes feel natural,” Kim said. “I also wanted to express the unique frustration of a teenage girl who has to give up dieting for the sake of her powers.”
Lee Jun Ho expressed strong confidence in the team’s chemistry. “Even without CGI on set, we could feel each other’s powers,” he said. “I even asked the director to make sure that came across clearly on screen.”
A major point of anticipation is the clash between “Team Sang Ung” and the Beominhoe, a mysterious organization that hunts superpowered individuals. Its successor candidates, Jonathan (Lee Chae Min) and Joanna (Kang Han Na), stand in direct opposition to the heroes.
Lee Chae Min takes on a villain role for the first time. “I focused on the idea of hunting,” he explained. “I wanted to portray a ruthless character who stops at nothing to reach his target—and even takes pleasure in the process.”
Kang Han Na emphasized her character’s domineering chaebol heiress persona. “Joanna keeps superpowered individuals in check, yet views them with curiosity,” she said. “I tried to portray that unpredictable duality in a layered way.”
The two display convincing sibling chemistry on screen. Kang recalled, “When facing Chae Min during scenes, he was genuinely intimidating because his acting was so strong. I had to push back even harder to match that energy.”
While their characters are adversaries, the atmosphere on set was warm and collaborative. Lee Junho, in particular, praised Lee Chae Min. “He practiced ahead of time before filming even began,” Lee said. “That level of preparation made our chemistry feel very natural.”
Both Lee Chae Min and Lee Junho previously topped Netflix’s global Top 10 with 'Bon Appétit, Your Majesty,' and 'King the Land,' respectively. Lee Chae Min commented, “Rather than feeling pressure, I’m excited to show a new side of myself.”
Lee Jun Ho added, “I don’t want to obsess over numbers. I just hope a lot of people watch it. That alone would make me very happy.”
Kang Han Na concluded by saying, “This is a project that every staff member and actor poured an incredible amount of time and effort into. As a result, each actor’s unique charm really shines.”
Lee Jun Ho echoed the sentiment: “It’s so immersive you can easily watch all eight episodes in one sitting. It’s packed with humor, but also deeply rooted in everyday life—something audiences can truly relate to.”
Meanwhile, 'Cashero' premieres on Netflix on December 26.
