USPEER returns after a year of uncertainty: “We’ll show you how much we’ve grown”
by K-Soul · allkpopUSPEER has returned with their first mini-album, 'BITE DISTRICT,' nearly a year after releasing their debut album 'SPEED ZONE.' During that time, the group changed agencies and reorganized into a six-member lineup after the departure of their leader, Yeowon.
The past year was filled with uncertainty for the members. Their comeback schedule remained unclear, and they had to navigate lineup changes. Despite the challenges, they refused to give up, focusing instead on returning with a stronger, more polished performance.
“We all prepared for this comeback with one heart and one goal,” Sian said. “We wanted to show high-quality performances to the fans who continued supporting us without change.”
USPEER held a showcase for the release of their first mini-album, 'BITE DISTRICT,' on June 17 at Myunghwa Live Hall in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.
The group admitted that the past year had not been easy. “There were many moments when I felt like I was falling apart,” Chaena said candidly.
However, the members leaned on one another throughout the difficult period. “We had a lot of honest conversations,” Seoyu explained. “Through those talks, we encouraged each other and renewed our passion for performing.”
USPEER also introduced a new leadership system. Instead of maintaining a fixed leader, the group now elects a captain through an annual internal vote.
“We thought it would be an opportunity for everyone to grow by leading the team in different ways,” Daon explained.
This year's captain is Sian. Laughing, she said, “The responsibility is definitely heavier, but I think the benefits outweigh it because I get even more love from the members.”
The group spent their hiatus refining both their teamwork and skills. Compared to their debut era, the members say they are now ready to showcase more relaxed vocals and confident performances.
'BITE DISTRICT' captures the youthful emotions of young girls and contains four tracks: the title song “Wicked Game,” along with “So Fine,” “Bestie,” and “Loud.”
“While we showed a sporty charm in our debut album, this time we wanted to present a brighter and more bubbly side of ourselves,” Daon said.
The title track “Wicked Game” portrays girls who are inexperienced when it comes to love. The song combines bright melodies with dreamy elements.
“There are so many listening points throughout the track,” Roa said. “All of the members’ vocal colors blend together beautifully, and I think the cute lyrics are another highlight.”
The song’s signature choreography is what the members call the “peek-a-boo dance.” Seoyu demonstrated the move, explaining, “You cover your face with your hands and then stick out your tongue playfully.”
USPEER performed both “Wicked Game” and “So Fine” for the first time during the showcase. The members continued fine-tuning details until moments before taking the stage, carefully checking formations and spacing even while the stage lights were off.
The “Wicked Game” performance highlighted the playful “peek-a-boo dance,” with each member showcasing her individual charm through adorable expressions. Despite the lighthearted concept, the sharpness of their movements reflected the intensity of their practice.
“So Fine” offered a brighter, more refreshing atmosphere. Holding handheld microphones, the members showcased their clear vocals, while energetic jumping sections highlighted USPEER’s signature youthful appeal.
Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the performances was the members’ genuine smiles. Their joyful expressions throughout the showcase reflected just how much they had longed to return to the stage.
The members also shared their goals for the new promotion cycle.
“We want to deliver performances that make fans think, ‘This is so USPEER,’ and ‘The wait was worth it,’” Seoyu said.
Daon expressed her gratitude to fans as well. “Thank you to everyone who waited for us,” she said. “We’ll repay you with great energy and great performances.”
The group also reaffirmed its artistic direction.
“We still want to be a group that gives people energy,” Soee said. “I hope our performances can give strength to those who watch them.”
Sian added, “We’ll continue protecting our own unique color while showing many different sides of ourselves. Please look forward to discovering even more new charms from us during this promotion.”
