In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Varun Dhawan opened up about feeling insecure with Sidharth Malhotra. He was quoted saying that he wondered if people will watch him given that Sidharth Malhotra is so good looking. "He was tall and wide, good looking, and there were two heroes in the film. At that time, I felt that he is amazing and looks handsome, so people will only watch him. Will people even notice me or not? What if my dream only stays a dream?" Varun Dhawan said. He further touched upon the topic of nepotism and created headlines in entertainment news.

Varun Dhawan recalled that during the release of Student of The Year, there was a lot of chatter around nepotism. He hadn't planned anything but knew that he had worked hard for it. "The reception has not always been flowery, that’s what people feel. But, I have had to fight that a lot. No matter what happens, I will keep fighting," the actor added. Varun Dhawan also noted that the perception about him broke only after his films started performing. Further mentioning that his father offered him work only in later part of his career so far.
