Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie’s Wuthering Heights is getting terrible reviews.
Released this weekend, Wuthering Heights is a gothic romance/drama/tragedy inspired by Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name. Elordi and Robbie star as feisty, ill-fated lovers amidst the foggy moors of England and a (genuinely impressive) candy-coated backdrop of beautifully designed sets. The movie has been described as bizarre and corny, but at least aesthetically pleasing.
Wuthering Heights was highly-anticipated as it was written and directed by Emerald Fennell, whose previous movies Saltburn and Promising Young Woman were moderately well-received. Elordi and Robbie were also a big draw, as was the soundtrack, for which Charli XCX contributed an original album of songs. It was released on Valentine’s Day weekend for peak appeal to lovesick audiences.
Unfortunately, fans and critics have not received the movie with praise. Wuthering Heights‘s critical score on Rotten Tomatoes is just 63% and the movie has a 3.0 rating on Letterboxed.
One snarky fan joked that the movie was Kissing Booth 4, a reference to Elordi’s early days as an actor when he stared in the Netflix teen romcom The Kissing Booth. Another said, “Emily Brontë died of tuberculosis 177 years ago yet this adaptation is still the worst thing that ever happened to her.”
