September 8 is Jonathan Taylor Thomas’ 45th birthday.

Thomas is the actor who became one of the defining child stars of the 1990s as Randy Taylor, the sharp-tongued middle son on Home Improvement. Around the same time he voiced young Simba in Disney’s The Lion King, then headlined live-action films including Tom and Huck, Man of the House, and The Adventures of Pinocchio. For millennials, he was the era’s teen-magazine face — the kid from Thursday-night sitcoms whose voice also belonged to a Disney prince — before he stepped away from fame to study at Harvard and Columbia and live a much quieter adult life.

At the peak of his fame he told the press, “I think kids often get caught up in this industry and take it for more than it really is. I think you just have to take it with a grain of salt because nothing in this industry really totally makes sense.” He was just 14 at the time.

Even then, he was already planning his exit. He talked about going to college and moving behind the camera to direct, and he warned about the traps other child actors had fallen into. “I think you just have to take it with a grain of salt because nothing in this industry really totally makes sense,” he said.

He followed through. By the early 2000s he had left Home Improvement early and wound down his acting, then attended Harvard, Columbia and St. Andrews in Scotland. “I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old,” he told PEOPLE in 2013. “I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break.”

He returned to TV a handful of times between 2013 and 2015 on Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing.
