After Hilary Swank announced she’s expecting her third child at 52, a 39-year-old follower told her she was still single and childless and wondered whether the life she wanted could still happen. Swank answered with encouragement and an admission about how hard waiting can be.

“I always go by the adage, things happen in their time, not ours, and that has always been the case for me. But of course trusting that, for me, has always been the hardest part,” Swank wrote.

She added: “Wishing you unwavering trust and abundant beauty on your journey!”

Swank announced the pregnancy on October 14 with a video featuring her husband, Philip Schneider, and their 3-year-old twins, Ohm and Aya. The family danced with glowsticks, and a tiny glowing baby figure on her belly revealed the news.

She’s previously spoken about wanting children long before she became a mother. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want them earlier. There were a lot of things that kept that from happening, and so I can really take time to be with them,” she said.

Having an established career has given her more control over when she works and how much attention she can give her children. “In my career being so established, I have the ability to kind of step in and step out when I choose, and that is just such a blessing.”

She also said the years before parenthood gave her time to work on herself and address patterns she didn’t want to pass down.

“One of the things that I feel is important about being your best parenting self is having done that work, so you break any cycles that you don’t want to impart on your children, and I’ve done a lot of that work over time, so I didn’t have to do a lot of catch up with that.”
