Anne Hathaway spent real work hours figuring out how to convincingly bite a wooden headboard for her new movie Verity.

Talking to The Spill, the Australian entertainment podcast, Hathaway said she and director Michael Showalter held multiple meetings on how to sell the moment. Each of them had to bring their own version of the bite to show the other.

She still laughs about Showalter’s take. Making eye contact, he bit into the prop, and she told him, “I’m so sorry, I just felt like you were eating a sandwich.” He asked what she’d do instead, she showed him, and the two settled on a bite together.

The prop was balsa wood, soft enough to take teeth marks. Hathaway said she couldn’t believe she was an adult “figuring out how to bite a piece of balsa wood at work today.”

Showalter said he was happy after the first take, and she didn’t press the point.

Verity is the erotic psychological thriller adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, with Hathaway as Verity Crawford, Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh and Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford. It opens in the U.S. on October 2.
