Lena Dunham Addresses Becoming a Mother After Endometriosis Ended Her Chances of Carrying a Child

Lena Dunham is a mother. The writer and director has welcomed her first child, a baby girl, via surrogate — a daughter who arrived 13 days late to Dunham and her husband, musician Luis Felber. The baby’s name hasn’t been revealed.

Dunham, 40, shared the news in a Vogue op-ed, announcing that she and Felber had welcomed their first child through a surrogate. Recalling her first moments as a mother, she told her daughter, “We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.”

The birth followed years of uncertainty about whether Dunham could become a parent. She underwent a hysterectomy in 2017 at age 31 after living with endometriosis, later describing the operation as both “a grief” and “a relief.”

Dunham and Felber have been married since 2021. In July 2025, she told The Times they were “in the process of expanding our family in new ways” — a quiet hint at the news to come.

She’d expected to feel jealous that another woman could carry her child, but wrote that those feelings never came. Instead, she felt jealous of her daughter for being carried by someone who “radiated such safety.”
