Jaclyn Smith, now 80, played Kelly Garrett on Charlie’s Angels beginning with the show’s 1976 debut alongside Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson.

Tanya Roberts joined the show in its fourth season, and Smith writes in her memoir that Roberts and husband Barry had an open marriage she “wasn’t shy about in the least, or about propositioning people to ‘swing’ with them.” The pitch to Smith came mid-air, on the way to film in Hawaii. She turned it down but calls Roberts’ “honesty about her sexuality to be brave and self-aware.”

The memoir goes darker on the show’s final stretch. By the fifth and last season, Smith writes, cocaine “had become a constant presence on set,” and she started hiding out. “The more drug use I saw, the more time I spent in my motor home,” she writes. “I was in there a lot by the end of the series.” She says she’s never touched the drug and never will, having “watched that drug, in particular, turn people into the worst version of themselves.”

The show turns 50 on September 22. Smith says her bonds with Fawcett and Jackson held through all of it: “After the applause, the friendship is still there. That sisterhood was strong.”
