Alec Baldwin Says a New Documentary About the Fatal ‘Rust’ Shooting Shows “So Much Of Me At My Worst.”

Alec Baldwin says a new documentary about the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of “Rust” shows “so much of me at my worst.” The film, titled The Trial of Alec Baldwin, revisits the on-set accident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and traces how it became years of grief, scrutiny and court battles for the actor.

Baldwin says he’d have climbed Mount Everest if it could bring Hutchins back. The documentary begins with the 911 call reporting the shooting, which also injured director Joel Souza. In the trailer, the 68-year-old actor recalls learning Hutchins had died: “I was in shock. I was in disbelief.”

The film also examines the intense press attention and the question of how a live round was loaded into a prop gun. One person in the trailer shouts at Baldwin, “Alec, you killed someone by accident. How do you feel?”

Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter in early 2023. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Baldwin’s case was permanently dismissed in July 2024 because police and prosecutors withheld evidence from his defense team.

The documentary, directed by Rory Kennedy, premiered at the DOC NYC festival last year. It opens in New York on Oct. 1 and nationwide on Oct. 16.
